The Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Penance, or Penance and Reconciliation) has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration. In it we find God's unconditional forgiveness; as a result we are called to forgive others.
When we go to confession with a priest, we say the Act of Contition. We also let the priest know how long it has been since our last confession. As catholics, we should be attending confession regularly, this act of repenting helps us to get rid of all the sins we carry and helps us get closer to God.
Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my
sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend
Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly
resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near
occasions of sin.
